Journaling for Recovery: Prompts That Actually Help

Skip the blank page anxiety. Specific journaling prompts designed for people in recovery, with examples of what to write.

Why Journaling Works (When It Works)

Journaling isn’t magic. It’s a tool. And like any tool, it works when you use it right.

For recovery, journaling does three things:

  1. Processes emotions before they become cravings
  2. Creates evidence of your growth (useful on hard days)
  3. Reveals patterns you can’t see in real-time

But staring at a blank page thinking \”write about your feelings\” doesn’t work. You need specific prompts.

Did I have cravings today? When?
What triggered them?
What did I do instead?
How do I feel now that I didn't drink?

The Stoic Journaling Tradition

Marcus Aurelius wrote \”Meditations\” — his private journal. He never meant for anyone to read it. He was just processing his thoughts, reminding himself of principles, working through challenges.

You’re doing the same thing he did 2,000 years ago.

\”Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.\” — Marcus Aurelius

Writing helps you become.

Start Now

You don’t need a fancy journal. Open a notes app. Grab a napkin. Use the back of a receipt.
